About Us
When Girls Get Together, Inc. (WGGT) is an after-school program founded in 2021 to support middle- and high-school-aged African-American females. It launched following research revealing that these girls are increasingly vulnerable to childhood trauma, sexual violence, and sex trafficking. Add these to other obstacles facing the Black population: systemic racism, lack of career preparedness, and access to mental health and social support.
In response, a team of concerned educators, school administrators, and business leaders in Chicago’s south suburbs designed a robust after-school program that includes: African-American studies, financial literacy/entrepreneurship, visual and performing arts, mentoring, physical education, STEM instruction, and tutoring. The curriculum won an Illinois State Board of Education Phillip Jackson Freedom School Grant.
Our after-school programs meet in various locations, Monday through Thursday, and are taught by subject matter experts, entrepreneurs, and professionals. WGGT also takes the girls on educational field trips and sponsors an annual cotillion to teach social skills and build confidence. NBC5 Chicago featured our 2025 cotillion on a news show, heightening awareness of the positive impact we are making.
WGGT charges no tuition or fees.
